Membership with LSPIRG
All undergraduate students at Laurier are LSPIRG members until they opt out from paying the term fees for LSPIRG. For others, membership as a ‘Community Member’ can be acquired by filling in a registration form available online. There is a fee of $20 per year, which entitles the member to obtain regular updates on LSPIRG and Working Group events as well as discounts on event and training registrations.
Volunteering with LSPIRG
LSPIRG aims to build capacity of its members to be agents of social change including its volunteers. LSPIRG operates on the philosophy that the volunteers are to accomplish the organization’s mission. This is to provide LSPIRG volunteers with an opportunity to build their leadership skills by coordinating different events and projects. The staff role in this process is supporting, encouraging and facilitating actions. Volunteers also have an opportunity to get involved with the following committees:
Events Committee
This committee assists with the organization of LSPIRG events such as Halloween Horrors, Buy Nothing Day, the Lazy Activist Fair, and the Complementary O-week. Volunteer opportunities are suited to the availability of volunteers and their desired level of commitment; their role can be as small yet as crucial as running errands at the day of the event or as big as coordinating the actual event.
Training Committee
Members of this committee help facilitate the mandatory sessions working groups are required to go through. Volunteers can assist with the strategic planning sessions at the beginning of the academic year and/or with the debriefing sessions held at the end of the year. All training for volunteers is provided to prepare them to facilitate these sessions.
Marketing Support Committee
This team assists the Marketing and Communications Coordinator in raising awareness about LSPIRG and creating promotional materials for LSPIRG and Working Group events. Volunteers have an opportunity to utilize their creativity and their graphic design skills to build their portfolio while helping LSPIRG engage students in social change.
